Congratulations to ex-president Lisa, one of the winners of the Wildstyle competition at Pollan Strand at the weekend. Well done guy! However, this is the closest thing we could get to a Lisa action shot, since in every other picture she is holding a drink.

It's a long way to T-Bay!!

It's that time of year again when all colleges battle it out on the waves to become the over all winner of the ISA Intervarsity Surfing Championships and try to reign victory over NUI Galway who hold the title for the over all winner in Portrush in 2005

Every year the event attracts students from up to twenty different third level colleges and universities in Ireland. The event this year will be hosted by the Waterford Institute of Technology in conjunction with T-Bay Surf Club, in Tramore, Co. Waterford. Due to the lack of waves the event was unfortunately cancelled in Salthill last year and because of unforeseen events was not rescheduled.
The main question on everyone's lips is who will take the title of Irish Surf Intervarsity Champions this year, the only way to find out is to be there on the 24 th and 25th of February.

Teams will consist of 2 Open Surfers, 1 woman surfer, 1 Bodyboard and Longboard
Titles will be awarded for five events team, with prizes for 1st to 3rd in each.

On Saturday an Expression Session will be held to enable up and coming surfers to display their techniques and for the not so good to show their stylish wipeouts. Also their will be prizes awarded for various categories such as craziest surf outfit in the water and more to be announced…

For the main event is €10 and €25 for ISA membership and collection for this will be on the Friday night

Surf Safety

With winter upon us once again the Irish Surfing Association would like to take this opportunity to reinforce our “Safe Surfing” guidelines. Surfing is an adventure sport with an inherent element of risk. The risk is increased during winter months as conditions become more extreme but it can be reduced if surfers adhere to basic safety.

Search and Rescue services are being called out to surfers more often than ever before. The Irish Surfing Association would request every surfer to unconditionally respect our rescue services. Even the most experienced surfer may at some time require the assistance of the Irish Coast Guard. Should you see a surfer in difficulty in the water DON’T DELAY phone 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.

Safe Surfing Guidelines

Never surf alone.

Only surf if you can swim.

Do not go surfing as dusk is approaching.

Check the weather and tides before you paddle out.

Learn to observe condition so you can identify hazards.

Surf waves suitable to your ability. If you are a novice take some surfing lessons and stick to beaches until you are experienced.

If a break is unfamiliar to you get advice from local surfers before getting in.

Check that your equipment, particularly your leash, is in good order. Remember it is easier to spot a brightly coloured surfboard or wetsuit at sea.

When you wipe out do not come to the surface to quickly, allow your board time to land and come to the surface with your hands over your head.

When paddling out always check behind you before abandoning your board.

Never “drop in” on another surfer. The surfer nearest to peak has priority.

If you do find yourself in difficulty stay calm and stay with your board.

If you get caught in a rip do not try to paddle against the flow, paddle across it.

If you see another surfer in difficulty do not delay, phone 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard. Always respect the Coast Guard.

Hey, if you don't already know, there's a couple of UU surfers competing in the Surfing World Games this weekend. One of them, Shauna Ward, is having a benefit gig tonight in Sandinos in Derry. There's a few of us likely to be heading and it's for it good cause so if your interested in heading send an email round or leave a message (with your phone number) on the message board and one of us should hopefully pick it up and get in touch about lifts.

Surf-ism

“Irish surfing is still an emerging and largely amateur sport, and so Irish team members must find their own way to compete at the Worlds. Here in town, local surfers are getting together to do our bit. We have organised a surf benefit called Surf-ism, to help Magee student, Shauna Ward, get to Huntington. Most people love the look and feel of surfing, and so we are planning a night of acoustic music and amazing surf visuals to give her a big send off. Everyone is welcome to Surf-ism on Tuesday 10th October upstairs in Sandinos in Water St. Derry’s finest, Keith “Jack Johnson” will play a live set, and DJs will battle it out head to head into the wee small hours with a few thumping disco and motown sets.”

I'm sure you guys have all seen the wee article about John McCurry, a member of our very own surf club, and Shauna Ward, who runs the Magee surf club, on the UU website
Well, on behalf of the club I just want to wish them and the whole of the Irish team the best of luck in California. All details of the competition results will be posted on the isa ireland website www.isasurf.ie or you can watch the whole event streamed live at ISA website from Friday 13th October.

How to Join, Nite out, Swim test

Nite Out
In case any of ye's don't know all the watersports clubs are meeting up for drinks in Bar7 tonight (Thursday 5th) at 9pm.

Swim Test
There's also a swim test on tonight, 8:15 to 9pm at Coleraine Leisure Centre. If you want to join a watersports club you have to do one before you can go out. It's dead easy- a 50m swim with no time limit. Martin has said that if anyone can do the whole 50m underwater he will buy them a drink tonight, which is very generous I think, so I would encourage you all to turn up to try it.

How to join
A lot of people have been asking about how to join the surf club. It's pretty straight forward, you just make your way to the sports centre (it's behind the students union), then it's 10pounds to join the sports centre (if you're not already a member), and a further tenner to join the sports union/surf club. If you're a member of any other sports union club (sailing, karate...) it's actually only three pounds to join the surf club. And likewise if you're a member of the surf club, then it's only three pounds to join any other club.

Freshers were given the chance to try out surfing for free on Monday 18th September. I'm pleased to report that all the potential newbies went home with big smiles on their blue, weather-beaten faces! Hopefully TK has convinced them all to join the club.
